The West Side Lumber Company founded in 1898 by William H. Crocker was instrumental in providing lumber fro the developing western frontier. Located in present day Tuolumne, California, West Side Lumber's original purpose was to transport tourists to nearby Yosemite National Park. The vast resource of Ponderosa and Sugar Pine in the area ensued, however, that few passengers ever rode the the West Side Lumber rails. With over 4 billion board feet of lumber to harvest, West Side became an important supplier of lumber for a growing nation.

The workhorse of the West Side Lumber fleet of locomotives was the Lima Shay.
